Looking for better insurance rates for your Mazda MX-6? Searching for discount insurance can seem to be rather challenging for drivers new to comparing rates and buying insurance on the internet. With so many companies, how are we expected to have time to compare every one to find the cheapest rates?
More discounts mean cheap premiums
Companies that sell car insurance do not advertise every available discount very clearly, so the following is a list of a few of the more common and the more hidden credits available to you.
- Discount for Life Insurance – Not all companies offer life insurance, but some may give you a break if you buy some life insurance too.
- Anti-theft Discount – Cars equipped with tracking devices and advanced anti-theft systems can help prevent theft and can earn a small discount on your policy.
- Data Collection Discounts – Drivers who agree to allow driving data collection to monitor where and when they drive by using a telematic data system such as Snapshot from Progressive or Drivewise from Allstate may see discounts if they are good drivers.
- Discount for Multiple Policies – If you combine your home and auto policies with one company you could save at least 10% off all policies.
- ABS and Traction Control Discounts – Cars and trucks that have anti-lock braking systems have fewer accidents and the ABS can save up to 10%.
A little disclaimer on discounts, many deductions do not apply to the entire cost. A few only apply to the cost of specific coverages such as collision or personal injury protection. So when the math indicates it’s possible to get free car insurance, companies don’t profit that way. But any discount will bring down your policy premiums.
Some of the larger companies that have some of the above discounts include:
When comparing rates, check with all the companies which credits you are entitled to. All car insurance discounts might not be offered on policies in your area.

It’s not one size fits all
When buying coverage, there isn’t really a “perfect” insurance plan. Everyone’s situation is unique.
For instance, these questions may help you determine whether your personal situation might need an agent’s assistance.
- Do I need PIP (personal injury protection) coverage in my state?
- Do I benefit by insuring my home with the same company?
- Do I need added coverage for expensive stereo equipment?
- Is my custom paint covered by insurance?
- Does my medical payments coverage pay my health insurance deductible?
- Am I covered if my car is in a flood?
- Can I make deliveries for my home business?
- Exactly who is provided coverage by my policy?
- Does coverage extend to a rental car in a foreign country?
- Do I pay less if my vehicle is kept in my garage?
If you’re not sure about those questions, then you may want to think about talking to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, simply complete this short form.
Save $492 a year. For real?
Big name companies like Geico, State Farm and Progressive seem to constantly run ads in print and on television. All the companies state the claim that people will save if you move to them. How does every company lower your prices? It’s all in the numbers.
Different companies quote their cheapest rates for the type of customer that will not have excessive claims. For example, a profitable customer should be a married male, carries full coverage, and drives a car with an anti-theft system. Any customer who matches those parameters is entitled to the best price and as a result will probably cut their rates substantially.
Insureds who do not meet these standards will probably be forced to pay a more expensive rate and the customer buying from someone else. The wording the ads use say “drivers who switch” not “everyone that quotes” can save as much as they claim. That’s why companies can make those statements.
Because of the profiling, you really need to get price quotes at each policy renewal. It’s impossible to know which company will fit you best based on your risk profile.
Insurance specifics
Having a good grasp of your insurance policy helps when choosing the right coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Comprehensive insurance
Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first have to pay a deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive can pay for claims such as vandalism, damage from a tornado or hurricane, falling objects, rock chips in glass and damage from getting keyed. The maximum amount your insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Auto liability
This coverage protects you from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property that is your fault. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. Your policy might show values of 100/300/100 which stand for $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage protects against claims such as repair bills for other people’s vehicles, repair costs for stationary objects and attorney fees. How much coverage you buy is a decision to put some thought into, but buy higher limits if possible.
Auto collision coverage
This coverage will pay to fix damage to your MX-6 from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. A deductible applies then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision can pay for claims like rolling your car, sustaining damage from a pot hole, colliding with a tree, sideswiping another vehicle and driving through your garage door. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from older vehicles. Another option is to bump up the deductible to bring the cost down.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for bills for EMT expenses, funeral costs, doctor visits and hospital visits. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance program or if you are not covered by health insurance. It covers both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not an option in every state but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
This coverage gives you protection from other drivers when they do not carry enough liability coverage. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your 1996 Mazda MX-6.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their limits can quickly be used up. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is very important. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

A tidy conclusion
As you shop your coverage around, never buy lower coverage limits just to save a few bucks. In many instances, someone dropped liability limits or collision coverage only to discover later they didn’t have enough coverage. Your focus should be to buy the best coverage you can find at the best possible price while not skimping on critical coverages.
Drivers leave their current company for a number of reasons such as not issuing a premium refund, unfair underwriting practices, delays in paying claims or even extreme rates for teen drivers. Regardless of your reason, choosing a new insurance company can be pretty painless.
We’ve covered a lot of tips how to lower your 1996 Mazda MX-6 insurance car insurance rates. It’s most important to understand that the more companies you get premium rates for, the better your chances of lowering your premium rates. You may even discover the biggest savings come from the least-expected company.
