Vehicle owners that are new to comparing car insurance rates online can find purchasing cheaper insurance is harder than they anticipated.
Consumers should take time to do rate comparisons occasionally due to the fact that insurance prices trend upward over time. If you had the lowest price for Mazda3 coverage a couple years back you may be paying too much now. You can search a lot of auto insurance online, but I’m going to show you the easiest ways to slash your auto insurance rates.
If you currently have a car insurance policy, you will be able to cut costs considerably using these methods. The purpose of this post is to help you learn how to get online quotes and some tricks to saving. But car owners do need to understand how companies price online insurance and take advantage of how the system works.
Compare quotes for insurance
There are multiple methods to compare insurance quotes, but some are easier and takes less work. You could spend the better part of a day talking about coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you can utilize the internet to maximize your effort.
All the larger companies enroll in a system that enables customers to submit one quote, and each participating company can provide price quotes. This prevents consumers from doing quote forms to each company.
To participate in this free quote system, click here to open in new window.
The only downside to comparing rates this way is you don’t know exactly which companies to get pricing from. So if you want to choose individual companies to request quotes from, we have a page of companies who write insurance in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.
It’s your choice how you get your quotes, but try to use nearly identical coverage limits and deductibles for each comparison quote. If the quotes have different coverage information you will not be able to make a fair rate comparison. Even a minor difference in coverage limits could throw off the whole comparison. Just keep in mind that having more price comparisons will enable you to find the best rates. Some smaller insurers to not give prices over the internet, so it’s necessary to compare rates from the smaller companies as well.

These discounts can cut auto insurance rates
Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but you might find some hidden discounts to cut the cost considerably. Certain reductions will be credited at the time of quoting, but some discounts are required to be specially asked for before you get the savings. If you don’t get every credit available, you are paying more than you should be.
- Driver’s Ed – Teen drivers should sucessfully take a drivers education course if it’s offered in school.
- Bundled Policy Discount – If you insure your home and vehicles and insure them with the same company you may earn nearly 15% which can help you find the cheapest insurance.
- Anti-lock Brakes – Anti-lock brake equipped vehicles can reduce accidents and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
- Resident Student – Older children who are enrolled in higher education away from home and don’t have a car may be able to be covered for less.
- First Accident Forgiveness – This one isn’t a discount, but some insurance companies will allow you to have one accident without the usual rate increase if you are claim-free before the accident.
A little disclaimer on discounts, some credits don’t apply to the entire cost. Most only reduce the price of certain insurance coverages like collision or personal injury protection. Just because it seems like you can get free auto insurance, that’s just not realistic.
Auto insurance companies that may offer most of these discounts include:
If you need lower rates, check with all companies you are considering which discounts can lower your rates. Some discounts might not be available to policyholders everywhere. If you would like to see a list of providers who offer online auto insurance quotes, click this link.
When do I need an agent’s advice?
When it comes to buying coverage, there is no perfect coverage plan. Everyone’s needs are different.
For instance, these questions may help highlight whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- What if I total my 2010 Mazda Mazda3 and owe more than it’s worth?
- Is my babysitter covered when using my vehicle?
- Does coverage extend to a rental car in a foreign country?
- Does my policy pay for OEM or aftermarket parts?
- Is my teen driver covered when they drive my company car?
- Should I drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles?
- Are split liability limits better than a combined single limit?
- How many claims can I have before being cancelled?
- If my 2010 Mazda Mazda3 is totaled, can I afford another vehicle?
- Do I pay less if my vehicle is kept in my garage?
If you can’t answer these questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form.
What insurance coverages do you need?
Understanding the coverages of your policy can be of help when determining the right coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Insurance terms can be impossible to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
Collision – This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage pays for things such as colliding with a tree, hitting a parking meter, sideswiping another vehicle and driving through your garage door. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. Another option is to raise the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Medical payments and PIP coverage – Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for expenses like prosthetic devices, dental work and ambulance fees. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover all vehicle occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is only offered in select states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Liability coverages – This coverage can cover damage that occurs to other people or property by causing an accident. This coverage protects you against claims from other people. It does not cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You commonly see liability limits of 100/300/100 that translate to a limit of $100,000 per injured person, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability can pay for things like loss of income, funeral expenses and medical expenses. How much liability should you purchase? That is a personal decision, but you should buy as much as you can afford.
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. It can pay for medical payments for you and your occupants and also any damage incurred to your Mazda Mazda3.
Since a lot of drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is important protection for you and your family. Usually these limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Comprehensive auto coverage – This pays to fix your vehicle from damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims like falling objects, fire damage and hail damage. The highest amount a insurance company will pay at claim time is the market value of your vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider removing comprehensive coverage.
