If you are a novice to online auto insurance shopping, you can be baffled by the crazy number of insurers that all promise to save you money.
If you are paying for car insurance now, you will be able to lower your premiums substantially using this strategy. Pricing the best auto insurance is easy if you know what you’re doing. Although consumers do need to understand the way insurance companies sell online and apply this information to your search.
How to compare insurance coverage price quotes
Shopping for lower insurance coverage rates can take time and effort if you don’t utilize the most efficient way. You can waste a lot of time talking about coverages with agents in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting to quickly compare rates.
Many of the larger companies take part in a program where insurance shoppers submit their information once, and every company returns a rated price for coverage. This eliminates the need for quote forms to each company.
To compare rates now click here to start a free quote.
The one downside to pricing coverage this way is buyers cannot specifically choose which insurance companies you want pricing from. So if you want to select from a list of companies to compare, we put together a list of low cost insurance coverage companies in your area. Click here to view list.
However you get your quotes, make sure you use identical coverage data for each price quote. If the quotes have different values for each quote it will be next to impossible to determine which rate is truly the best. Quoting even small variations in coverage limits could skew the results. And when quoting insurance coverage, remember that quoting more helps improve the odds of finding more affordable insurance.

Affordable auto insurance rates with discounts
Auto insurance can be pricey, but you might already qualify for some discounts to help offset the cost. Some trigger automatically when you purchase, but a few need to be asked about before they will apply.
- Include Life Insurance and Save – Select insurance carriers reward you with a discount if you purchase a life insurance policy as well.
- Drive Safe and Save – Drivers who don’t get into accidents may save up to 50% more for Versa Note insurance than their less cautious counterparts.
- Seat Belts Save – Drivers who require all vehicle occupants to wear their seat belts can save a little on medical payment and PIP coverage.
- Membership in Organizations – Belonging to a professional or civic organization is a good way to get lower rates on your next auto insurance statement.
- Sign Online – Many larger companies give back up to $50 for signing up over the internet.
- Accident Forgiveness – Not a discount per se, but some companies like Geico, Progressive, and Allstate will forgive one accident without raising rates so long as you are claim-free for a particular time prior to the accident.
- Good Student Discount – This discount can save 20 to 25%. You can use this discount normally up to age 25.
- Distant Student Discount – Children who are attending college and do not have a car may be able to be covered for less.
- ABS and Traction Control Discounts – Anti-lock brake equipped vehicles can reduce accidents and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
You should keep in mind that most of the big mark downs will not be given to the entire policy premium. Most only cut individual premiums such as medical payments or collision. Despite the fact that it seems like all the discounts add up to a free policy, it’s just not the way it works.
A few of the larger companies and some of the discounts are outlined below.
- Geico offers discounts including anti-theft, multi-vehicle, emergency military deployment, multi-policy, driver training, anti-lock brakes, and military active duty.
- Travelers has savings for multi-car, early quote, driver training, home ownership, good student, and continuous insurance.
- Nationwide may offer discounts for business or organization, accident-free, good student, family plan, defensive driving, Farm Bureau membership, and anti-theft.
- Farmers Insurance may include discounts for teen driver, homeowner, youthful driver, early shopping, and distant student.
- Esurance offers discounts for claim free, emergency road assistance, online shopper, good driver, and renters.
- State Farm policyholders can earn discounts including passive restraint, driver’s education, anti-theft, defensive driving training, accident-free, and Steer Clear safe driver discount.
- Progressive has discounts for continuous coverage, online signing, online quote discount, multi-vehicle, homeowner, multi-policy, and good student.
- Mercury Insurance includes discounts for anti-theft, multi-policy, multi-car, low natural disaster claims, and professional/association.
If you need lower rates, check with every company to apply every possible discount. Some discounts listed above may not apply everywhere.
Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When choosing proper insurance coverage, there really is no one size fits all plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
Here are some questions about coverages that might point out if your insurance needs might need an agent’s assistance.
- What are the financial responsibility laws in my state?
- What is the rate difference between pleasure use and commuting?
- Am I covered if my car is in a flood?
- Is my custom paint covered by insurance?
- Should I rate my 2014 Nissan Versa Note as pleasure use or commute?
- Will my vehicle be repaired with OEM or aftermarket parts?
If you’re not sure about those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you might consider talking to an agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form.
Car insurance coverages for a 2014 Nissan Versa Note
Having a good grasp of car insurance can be of help when determining the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement.
Liability – This coverage protects you from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property in an accident. This insurance protects YOU from claims by other people, and does not provide coverage for damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You might see policy limits of 50/100/50 which means $50,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery.
Liability coverage pays for things such as medical services, funeral expenses, bail bonds and pain and suffering. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but buy as high a limit as you can afford.
Medical costs insurance – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for short-term medical expenses for pain medications, doctor visits and funeral costs. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover all vehicle occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal injury protection coverage is only offered in select states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
UM/UIM Coverage – This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other drivers when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. It can pay for injuries to you and your family and damage to your Nissan Versa Note.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision – Comprehensive insurance coverage will pay to fix damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things such as hail damage, damage from getting keyed, a broken windshield, vandalism and theft. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Collision coverages – This coverage covers damage to your Versa Note caused by collision with another car or object. You have to pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers things like sideswiping another vehicle, colliding with a tree, crashing into a ditch, colliding with another moving vehicle and damaging your car on a curb. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. You can also increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
