Shopping for the lowest price insurance coverage is difficult for vehicle owners new to quoting and comparing and buying insurance coverage over the internet. With so many agents and companies competing online, how are vehicle owners able to have the ability to compare each option to find the best available price?
You should make it a habit to compare premium rates as often as possible since insurance prices are constantly changing. If you had the best rates for Cube insurance a couple years back there may be better deals available now. Ignore everything you know about insurance coverage because I’m going to let you in on the secrets to the tricks you need to know to save money, get proper deductibles and limits, all at the lowest rate.
How much is insurance?
There are multiple methods you can shop for insurance but there is one way that is more efficient than others. You can waste a few hours (or days) talking to insurance agencies in your area, or you can utilize online quotes to get rates in a matter of minutes.
Most major companies belong to an insurance system where prospective buyers complete one form, and at least one company returns a rated price. This prevents consumers from doing quote forms to every company.
To find out how much you’re overpaying now click here (opens in new window).
The one disadvantage to using this type of system is buyers cannot specifically choose which providers you will receive quotes from. So if you prefer to choose individual companies to compare rates, we put together a list of companies who write insurance in your area. Click here to view list.
Compare rates however you want, just try to keep apples-to-apples quote data for every quote you compare. If the quotes have differing limits you can’t possibly truly determine the lowest rate. Just slight variations in insurance coverages or limits may cause a big price difference. And when price shopping your coverage, getting more free quotes helps locate the best offered rates. Not every company does online rate quotes, so it’s important to compare price quotes from the smaller companies as well.

Cheap insurance rates with discounts
Insurance can be prohibitively expensive, but discounts can save money and there are some available that you may not know about. A few discounts will automatically apply when you quote, but once in a while a discount must be manually applied prior to receiving the credit.
- College Student – Kids who attend college more than 100 miles from home and leave their car at home could get you a discount.
- Drive Less and Save – Maintaining low annual mileage could earn lower insurancerates due to less chance of an accident.
- Government Employees – Federal government employees may qualify for a discount when you quote auto insurance for Cube insurance with certain companies.
- Driving Data Discount – Insureds who allow driving data submission to look at their driving habits by using a telematic data system such as Progressive’s Snapshot and State Farm’s In-Drive may get a rate reduction if they are good drivers.
- Drive Safe and Save – Insureds without accidents can get discounts for up to 45% lower rates for Cube insurance than their less cautious counterparts.
- Safety Restraint Discount – Forcing all vehicle occupants to buckle their seat belts can save up to 10 percent (depending on the company) on the medical payments or PIP coverage costs.
- Accident Waiver – Not a discount per se, but companies like State Farm and Geico will allow you to have one accident without the usual rate increase so long as you haven’t had any claims before the accident.
A little note about advertised discounts, some of the credits will not apply to your bottom line cost. The majority will only reduce individual premiums such as liability and collision coverage. Just because it seems like adding up those discounts means a free policy, insurance companies wouldn’t stay in business.
A list of insurance companies and some of their more popular discounts include:
- The Hartford offers discounts including bundle, air bag, defensive driver, anti-theft, driver training, and vehicle fuel type.
- American Family may offer discounts for multi-vehicle, air bags, accident-free, defensive driver, bundled insurance, and mySafetyValet.
- Progressive policyholders can earn discounts including multi-policy, online signing, homeowner, continuous coverage, and good student.
- Travelers includes discounts for multi-policy, payment discounts, save driver, continuous insurance, early quote, good student, and multi-car.
- Farmers Insurance discounts include alternative fuel, good student, pay in full, mature driver, and bundle discounts.
- USAA offers discounts for safe driver, defensive driver, new vehicle, good student, and loyalty savings.
- Liberty Mutual offers premium reductions for exclusive group savings, good student, preferred payment discount, hybrid vehicle, new graduate, and teen driver discount.
If you are trying to find cheaper auto insurance quotes, ask every insurance company how you can save money. Some discounts listed above might not be offered on policies in your area. To find insurance companies with the best insurance discounts, click here to view.
Tailor your insurance coverage coverage to you
When choosing coverage, there is no perfect coverage plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
For instance, these questions could help you determine if you would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- Do I need PIP (personal injury protection) coverage in my state?
- Should I drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles?
- Do I pay less if my vehicle is kept in my garage?
- Is a new car covered when I drive it off the dealer lot?
- Exactly who is provided coverage by my policy?
- Is my ex-spouse still covered by my policy?
- Am I insured when driving a different vehicle?
- Am I covered if hit by an uninsured driver?
- What if I don’t agree with a claim settlement offer?
If you’re not sure about those questions then you might want to talk to a licensed agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form.
Car insurance coverage information
Knowing the specifics of your car insurance policy can help you determine which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection when the “other guys” do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants and also any damage incurred to your 2009 Nissan Cube.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. So UM/UIM coverage is very important. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Liability car insurance – Liability insurance protects you from damage or injury you incur to people or other property that is your fault. It protects you from legal claims by others, and does not provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show policy limits of 25/50/25 that means you have $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $50,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $25,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Alternatively, you may have a combined single limit or CSL which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as medical expenses, pain and suffering, attorney fees and emergency aid. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but consider buying as high a limit as you can afford.
Insurance for medical payments – Med pay and PIP coverage reimburse you for bills for EMT expenses, chiropractic care and hospital visits. They are often used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover both the driver and occupants as well as being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is only offered in select states and may carry a deductible
Collision coverages – Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from a collision with another car or object. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage pays for claims like colliding with another moving vehicle, scraping a guard rail, crashing into a ditch, hitting a parking meter and crashing into a building. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider removing coverage from lower value vehicles. You can also increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision) – This will pay to fix damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first have to pay a deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like theft, falling objects, vandalism and damage from getting keyed. The maximum payout you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider dropping full coverage.
