Trying to come up with a payment for expensive auto insurance can consume your personal savings and maybe even restrict other spending. Comparing rate quotes can save money and help to cut your insurance bill.
Big-name insurance companies like Geico and Progressive all claim big savings with advertising and consumers find it hard to ignore the flying pigs and cute green geckos and take the time to shop coverage around.
If you are paying for car insurance now, you should be able to lower your premiums substantially using this strategy. Choosing the best insurance company for you is not that difficult. Although vehicle owners must understand how the larger insurance companies market insurance on the web and apply this information to your search.
Compare quotes for auto insurance
There are a variety of methods to shop for auto insurance, and some are more efficient than others. You could waste time discussing policy coverages with insurance agencies in your area, or you can utilize the web to accomplish the same thing much quicker.
Many of the larger companies take part in a program where prospective buyers complete one form, and at least one company can provide price quotes based on that data. This saves time by eliminating quote forms for each company.

One minor caviat to getting quotes like this is buyers cannot specifically choose which carriers to get quotes from. So if you want to choose specific providers to compare, we have a page of auto insurance companies in your area. View list of insurance companies.
It doesn’t matter which method you choose, just ensure you are comparing identical coverage information on every quote you get. If you compare different data you will not be able to make a fair comparison for your Toyota Cressida. Just a small difference in insurance coverages can mean a large discrepancy in price. Just keep in mind that more quotes increases your odds of finding a lower rate than you’re paying now. Some smaller insurers to not give price estimates online, so it’s important to also get quotes from the smaller companies as well.

Insurance discounts help lower rates
Insurance can cost an arm and a leg, but you can get discounts that you may not even know about. A few discounts will be applied when you purchase, but a few must be inquired about prior to getting the savings.
- More Vehicles More Savings – Buying a policy with all your vehicles on a single policy qualifies for this discount.
- Low Mileage Discounts – Fewer annual miles on your Toyota can earn discounted premium rates on garaged vehicles.
- Discount for Home Ownership – Owning a home can get you a discount since home ownership is proof that your finances are in order.
- Passive Restraints – Factory air bags or automatic seat belts may earn rate discounts of up to 25% or more.
- Senior Citizens – Older drivers may qualify for a discount up to 10% on Cressida insurance.
One last thing about discounts, some credits don’t apply to the overall cost of the policy. Most only cut specific coverage prices like medical payments or collision. Even though it appears you could get a free insurance policy, it’s just not the way it works.

Which is the best car insurance?
When choosing the right insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there isn’t really a “perfect” insurance plan. Every situation is different and your policy should reflect that. For example, these questions can aid in determining whether or not you could use an agent’s help.
- Does my personal policy cover me when driving out-of-state?
- Should I get collision insurance on every vehicle?
- What is medical payments coverage?
- Do I need motorclub coverage?
- Am I missing any policy discounts?
- Why am I required to buy liability insurance?
- If my 1990 Toyota Cressida is totaled, can I afford another vehicle?
If you’re not sure about those questions then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, simply complete this short form or go to this page to view a list of companies.
Insurance coverages 101
Having a good grasp of insurance helps when choosing the best coverages for your vehicles. Insurance terms can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. Below you’ll find typical coverages offered by insurance companies.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered losses include injuries to you and your family and damage to your Toyota Cressida.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is very important. Usually these limits are set the same as your liablity limits.
Collision coverage
Collision insurance will pay to fix damage to your Cressida caused by collision with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage pays for things like damaging your car on a curb, sideswiping another vehicle and hitting a mailbox. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also choose a higher deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Coverage for liability
This provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on people or other property that is your fault. It protects YOU from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show limits of 50/100/50 that means you have $50,000 bodily injury coverage, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Some companies may use one number which is a combined single limit which provides one coverage limit without having the split limit caps.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as court costs, medical expenses, medical services, bail bonds and attorney fees. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but you should buy higher limits if possible.
Medical expense insurance
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage kick in for short-term medical expenses for surgery, chiropractic care, ambulance fees and funeral costs. They are used in conjunction with a health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover you and your occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is only offered in select states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers things such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, rock chips in glass, hail damage, fire damage and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The highest amount a insurance company will pay at claim time is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
