Searching for better insurance rates for your Toyota 4Runner? Finding budget insurance online can be challenging for consumers new to comparing prices on the web. When there are so many insurers to choose from, how are consumers expected to have a chance to compare every one to find the best price?
Get affordable car insurance with discounts
Insurance can be prohibitively expensive, but there’s a good chance there are discounts that could drop your premiums quite a bit. Larger premium reductions will be automatically applied when you complete an application, but some may not be applied and must be requested specifically before you will receive the discount. If you do not check that you are getting every discount possible, you are just wasting money.
- Discounts for Government Workers – Active or former government employment can earn a discount up to 10% for 4Runner coverage depending on your company.
- Theft Prevention System – Vehicles with anti-theft systems have a lower chance of being stolen and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
- E-sign Discounts – A few larger online companies will give a small break just for signing your application online.
- Drive Safe and Save – Safe drivers can get discounts for up to 45% lower rates for 4Runner coverage than their less cautious counterparts.
- Multiple Vehicles – Purchasing coverage when you have more than one vehicle with the same company can get a discount for every vehicle.
- Policy Bundle Discount – If you can combine your home and auto policy and insure them both with the same insurance company you could earn a discount of 10% to 20% off each policy.
- ABS Braking Discount – Cars, trucks, and SUVs with ABS and/or traction control can reduce accidents so companies give up to a 10% discount.
- Driver’s Education for Students – Teen drivers should participate in a local driver’s education class if offered at their school.
- Military Rewards – Being deployed with a military unit could trigger a small discount.
- Passenger Safety Discount – Vehicles with factory air bags or motorized seat belts may earn rate discounts as much as 30%.
Discounts lower rates, but most discount credits are not given to the entire cost. Some only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as liability and collision coverage. If you do the math and it seems like having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, companies wouldn’t make money that way.
A few popular companies and the discounts they provide are detailed below.
- State Farm discounts include safe vehicle, multiple autos, student away at school, accident-free, good driver, anti-theft, and passive restraint.
- Esurance offers discounts for Switch & Save, paid-in-full, defensive driver, renters, and anti-lock brakes.
- Progressive has discounts for continuous coverage, online quote discount, good student, multi-vehicle, online signing, and multi-policy.
- Liberty Mutual includes discounts for newly retired, new graduate, good student, exclusive group savings, multi-policy, safety features, and new vehicle discount.
- Auto-Owners Insurance offers premium reductions for group or association, multi-policy, paperless, anti-lock brakes, safe vehicle, and anti-theft.
- Geico offers discounts including daytime running lights, good student, membership and employees, anti-theft, driver training, and emergency military deployment.
Double check with all companies you are considering how many discounts you can get. Savings may not be available in every state.

Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When buying proper insurance coverage, there really is not a single plan that fits everyone. Everyone’s needs are different.
Here are some questions about coverages that might point out if your situation would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- What happens if I owe more than my 1996 Toyota 4Runner is worth?
- What should my uninsured motorist coverage limits be in my state?
- Do I need replacement cost coverage?
- What is PIP insurance?
- Which is better, split liability limits or combined limits?
- Can I afford to buy a different vehicle if my 1996 Toyota 4Runner is totaled?
If you’re not sure about those questions but one or more may apply to you then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form.
Insurance coverage basics
Having a good grasp of insurance helps when choosing appropriate coverage and proper limits and deductibles. The terms used in a policy can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Med pay and PIP coverage provide coverage for bills such as doctor visits, EMT expenses, X-ray expenses, hospital visits and pain medications. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants and also covers if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP coverage is not available in all states and may carry a deductible
Auto liability insurance
This will cover damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property. It protects YOU against claims from other people. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You might see values of 100/300/100 that translate to $100,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property.
Liability can pay for claims such as court costs, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and medical services. How much coverage you buy is a decision to put some thought into, but you should buy higher limits if possible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
This protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries and damage to your Toyota 4Runner.
Since a lot of drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked.
Collision insurance
Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision insurance covers things such as driving through your garage door, colliding with another moving vehicle, hitting a mailbox, crashing into a ditch and damaging your car on a curb. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Another option is to choose a higher deductible to bring the cost down.
Comprehensive insurance
This coverage will pay to fix damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things such as hitting a bird, a broken windshield, theft and falling objects. The highest amount a insurance company will pay at claim time is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
A penny earned…
When searching for low cost insurance quotes, it’s not a good idea to skimp on coverage in order to save money. Too many times, consumers will sacrifice liability coverage limits only to regret at claim time that the few dollars in savings costed them thousands. The aim is to purchase a proper amount of coverage at an affordable rate, but do not skimp to save money.
Some insurance providers may not provide online quoting and many times these smaller providers provide coverage only through independent insurance agents. Budget-conscious 1996 Toyota 4Runner insurance is available both online in addition to many insurance agents, and you should be comparing both so you have a total pricing picture.
Consumers switch companies for a variety of reasons including denial of a claim, policy non-renewal, high prices or even unfair underwriting practices. It doesn’t matter why you want to switch finding a great new company can be less work than you think.
