Wish you could get a refund on an expensive auto insurance policy? It’s quite common and many drivers feel the same as you. You have multiple car insurance companies to purchase coverage from, and though it is a good thing to be able to choose, more options can take longer to compare company pricing.
Save a ton with discounts
Companies offering auto insurance don’t always publicize the entire discount list in a way that’s easy to find, so the next list breaks down some of the best known in addition to some of the lesser obvious ways to save on auto insurance.
- Anti-theft Discount – Vehicles that have factory alarm systems and tracking devices prevent vehicle theft and will save you 10% or more.
- Government Employee Discount – Simply working for the federal government may reduce rates when you quote insurance coverage on Mustang coverage with some auto insurance companies.
- Low Miles Discount – Keeping the miles down on your Ford can qualify you for slightly better rates than normal.
- Senior Citizen Discount – If you’re over the age of 55, you can possibly qualify for reduced rates on Mustang coverage.
- Online Discount – Some insurance companies will discount your bill up to fifty bucks just for signing your application on the internet.
- Accident Forgiveness Coverage – This one is not really a discount per se, but some insurance companies will allow you to have one accident before they charge you more for coverage if your claims history is clear for a certain period of time.
- Auto/Home Discount – When you have multiple policies with one company you will save over 10 percent off each policy depending on the company.
- Air Bags and Passive Restraints – Cars that have air bags or automatic seat belts can qualify for discounts of 20% or more.
- Military Deployment Discount – Being on active duty in the military may lower your rates slightly.
Drivers should understand that most discount credits are not given to the entire cost. Most cut individual premiums such as liability, collision or medical payments. If you do the math and it seems like you can get free auto insurance, companies don’t profit that way.

What is the best car insurance coverage?
When buying the best car insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no “perfect” insurance plan. Everyone’s needs are different and your policy should reflect that. For example, these questions might point out if you may require specific advice.
- Does coverage extend to my business vehicle?
- Does liability extend to a camper or trailer?
- Is extra glass coverage worth it?
- How much liability insurance is required?
- Will my insurance pay for OEM parts?
- Do I need replacement cost coverage on my 2017 Ford Mustang?
- Where can I find high-risk insurance?
- Will filing a claim cost me more?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you think they might apply to your situation, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area. It only takes a few minutes and you can get the answers you need.
The coverage is in the details
Having a good grasp of a insurance policy helps when choosing the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. Insurance terms can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Listed below are typical coverages found on the average insurance policy.
Liability car insurance
Liability coverage can cover damage or injury you incur to other people or property by causing an accident. This coverage protects you from claims by other people, and doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Liability coverage has three limits: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. Your policy might show values of 100/300/100 which stand for $100,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as medical services, repair costs for stationary objects, court costs and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. How much coverage you buy is your choice, but consider buying as much as you can afford.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection from other drivers when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and damage to your Ford Mustang.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is very important. Frequently these coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Medical expense insurance
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for bills for things like prosthetic devices, nursing services, hospital visits, EMT expenses and funeral costs. The coverages can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. They cover all vehicle occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
Comprehensive insurance coverage covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like fire damage, rock chips in glass, a broken windshield and theft. The maximum amount a insurance company will pay at claim time is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Coverage for collisions
This pays for damage to your Mustang resulting from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage protects against claims like scraping a guard rail, damaging your car on a curb, colliding with a tree, crashing into a ditch and hitting a mailbox. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. Another option is to increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Save for a rainy day
As you shop your coverage around, do not reduce needed coverages to save money. There are too many instances where an insured dropped comprehensive coverage or liability limits only to discover later that it was a big mistake. Your aim should be to purchase a proper amount of coverage for the lowest cost, but do not sacrifice coverage to save money.
More affordable car insurance can be sourced both online in addition to local insurance agencies, so you need to shop insurance coverage with both in order to have the best chance of saving money. Some insurance companies do not provide online rate quotes and many times these regional carriers sell through independent agencies.
