Trying to find better auto insurance rates for your Volkswagen Touareg? Purchasing the cheapest auto insurance over the internet can appear to be somewhat difficult for drivers new to comparison shopping on the internet. With more and more companies in the marketplace, how can anyone possibly compare all the different companies and get the best pricing?
How to buy car insurance online
When looking for affordable auto insurance quotes, there are a couple ways to compare quotes from companies that offer car insurance in your state. The easiest way by far to compare rates involves getting comparison quotes online. This can be done in a couple minutes as outlined below.
The best way to get quotes is an all-inclusive rate comparison click to view form in new window. This type of form keeps you from doing separate quote forms for every company. Taking the time to complete one form gets you price quotes from all major companies. It’s definitely the quickest method.
A less efficient way to analyze rates is going to the website for each individual company and fill out their own quote form. For instance, let’s assume you need rates from Progressive, Safeco and Geico. To get each rate you have to spend time going to each site individually to enter your coverage information, which can get old fast. To view a list of companies in your area, click here.
The last method to price shop rates is going to and from local insurance agencies. Quoting online reduces the need to sit down with an agent unless you require the peace of mind that you can only get from talking to an agent. However, consumers can get prices online and have a local agent actually service the policy.
You can choose any of those ways to find more affodable coverage, but make sure you are using nearly identical quote information for each quote you get. If each company quotes different limits and deductibles on each one you will not be able to truly determine the lowest rate. Quoting even small variations in coverage limits could throw off the whole comparison. Just remember that obtaining a wide range of quotes provides better odds of finding better pricing. Not every company does rate quotes online, so you need to compare quotes from those companies as well.

Save with these discounts
Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but there could be significant discounts that you may not even be aware of. Some trigger automatically at the time you complete a quote, but some may not be applied and must be asked for before being credited.
- 55 and Retired – Mature drivers are able to get a discount up to 10% for Touareg coverage.
- Service Members Pay Less – Being on active deployment in the military could qualify you for better premium rates.
- Multiple Cars – Having several vehicles with the same auto insurance company may reduce the rate for each vehicle.
- Passive Restraint Discount – Factory options such as air bags or motorized seat belts may qualify for discounts of up to 25% or more.
- First Accident Forgiveness – Not really a discount, but some companies like Liberty Mutual, Allstate and State Farm allow you one accident without getting socked with a rate hike if you have no claims for a particular time prior to the accident.
- Pay Now and Pay Less – If you pay your entire premium ahead of time instead of monthly or quarterly installments you may reduce your total bill.
Remember that most credits do not apply to your bottom line cost. Some only apply to individual premiums such as physical damage coverage or medical payments. So when the math indicates you can get free auto insurance, that’s just not realistic.
Large auto insurance companies and their possible discounts are shown below.
- Progressive includes discounts for good student, online signing, online quote discount, multi-policy, multi-vehicle, continuous coverage, and homeowner.
- The Hartford may offer discounts for driver training, air bag, anti-theft, defensive driver, good student, vehicle fuel type, and bundle.
- Mercury Insurance may have discounts that include multi-policy, ease of repair, professional/association, location of vehicle, annual mileage, and multi-car.
- Geico offers premium reductions for good student, seat belt use, multi-policy, air bags, emergency military deployment, and anti-theft.
- AAA policyholders can earn discounts including good driver, good student, AAA membership discount, anti-theft, and multi-policy.

Special considerations
When choosing coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is not a “perfect” insurance plan. Every insured’s situation is different.
For example, these questions may help you determine whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.
- How much liability do I need to cover my assets?
- At what point should I drop full coverage?
- Does coverage extend to a rental car in a foreign country?
- Should I get collision insurance on every vehicle?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- Do I need PIP (personal injury protection) coverage in my state?
- Does my insurance cover a custom paint job?
- Am I covered if hit by an uninsured driver?
- Should I waive the damage coverage when renting a car?
- Can I pay claims out-of-pocket if I buy high deductibles?
If you’re not sure about those questions but one or more may apply to you then you might want to talk to a licensed agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form.
Coverages available on your insurance policy
Knowing the specifics of your policy helps when choosing the best coverages and proper limits and deductibles. The terms used in a policy can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Collision insurance
This covers damage to your Touareg resulting from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. A deductible applies and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage pays for claims like colliding with a tree, crashing into a ditch, hitting a parking meter, sustaining damage from a pot hole and crashing into a building. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. It’s also possible to bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Liability coverages
Liability coverage provides protection from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. It does not cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You commonly see liability limits of 100/300/100 that translate to $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Alternatively, you may have a combined limit which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for things such as emergency aid, court costs, repair costs for stationary objects, medical expenses and pain and suffering. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when the “other guys” do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered claims include injuries to you and your family as well as damage to your Volkswagen Touareg.
Due to the fact that many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is very important. Frequently these coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Medical payments coverage and PIP
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for short-term medical expenses such as rehabilitation expenses, X-ray expenses, prosthetic devices, pain medications and funeral costs. The coverages can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. It covers you and your occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available and may carry a deductible
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like damage from a tornado or hurricane, hail damage, theft, damage from flooding and hitting a deer. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
