Searching for better insurance rates for your Ford Focus? Being forced to pay for expensive insurance premiums can eat up your budget and possibly require postponing other expenditures. Performing a rate comparison is recommended to ensure you are getting the best deal.
Multiple car insurance companies compete for your insurance dollar, so it can be very hard to choose a insurance company to find the absolute lowest rate possible.
How to get cheap insurance
There are a lot of ways you can shop for insurance but there is one way that is less labor-intensive and much quicker. You can waste a few hours (or days) discussing policy coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you can utilize online quotes to maximize your effort.
Many insurance companies belong to a marketplace that allows shoppers to complete one form, and each company then returns a price quote for coverage. This prevents consumers from doing quotation requests for each company you want a rate for.

The only drawback to doing it this way is buyers cannot specifically choose the insurers to receive prices from. If you would rather choose individual companies to compare, we have a page of insurance companies in your area. View list of insurance companies.
Whichever way you use, ensure you’re using exactly the same coverage information for each quote you get. If your comparisons have different liability limits it will be next to impossible to decipher which rate is best.

Get cheaper insurance coverage rates with discounts
Properly insuring your vehicles can get expensive, but there’s a good chance there are discounts that you may not even be aware of. Some of these disounts will be visible when you purchase, but some need to be inquired about before they will apply. If you’re not getting every credit you qualify for, you are not getting the best rate possible.
- E-sign – Many larger companies may give you up to $50 get insurance on your computer.
- Discount for Multiple Policies – If you can combine your home and auto policy with the same insurance company you may earn up to 20% and get you low cost insurance.
- Discount for Home Ownership – Being a homeowner may trigger a policy discount on insurance coverage because of the fact that having a home is proof of financial responsibility.
- Good Students Pay Less – Excelling in school can get you a discount of up to 25%. The discount lasts well after school through age 25.
- Accident-Free Discounts – Drivers who stay claim-free pay much less in comparison to policyholders that have many claims.
- Multiple Vehicles – Buying coverage for multiple vehicles with the same insurance coverage company can get a discount for every vehicle.
A little note about advertised discounts, many deductions do not apply to the entire cost. Some only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as comprehensive or collision. So even though it sounds like all the discounts add up to a free policy, it just doesn’t work that way. But all discounts should definitely cut the amount you pay for coverage.
Large insurance coverage companies and a selection of discounts include:
- 21st Century offers discounts including air bags, theft prevention, student driver, 55 and older, and homeowners.
- Progressive offers discounts for online signing, multi-policy, online quote discount, homeowner, and continuous coverage.
- State Farm includes discounts for anti-theft, passive restraint, good driver, multiple autos, Steer Clear safe driver discount, and Drive Safe & Save.
- Nationwide may offer discounts for defensive driving, family plan, easy pay, Farm Bureau membership, multi-policy, good student, and business or organization.
- Esurance discounts include homeowner, claim free, defensive driver, Pac-12 alumni, and good student.
- The Hartford may have discounts that include defensive driver, driver training, air bag, anti-theft, and good student.
If you need inexpensive insurance quotes, ask each company what discounts are available to you. Some of the discounts discussed earlier may not apply in every state. To find providers with discount insurance coverage rates, follow this link.
Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage, there isn’t really a single plan that fits everyone. Everyone’s situation is unique and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. Here are some questions about coverages that may help highlight whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- Do I need special endorsements for business use of my vehicle?
- Should I rate my 2017 Ford Focus as pleasure use or commute?
- Should I have combined single limit or split liability limits?
- Should I put collision coverage on all my vehicles?
- How do I buy GAP insurance?
- Am I covered if hit by an uninsured driver?
- What exactly is covered by my policy?
- Is my trailer covered?
- Do I have coverage for damage caused while driving under the influence?
- When should my teen driver be added to my policy?
If you’re not sure about those questions, you might consider talking to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area. It’s fast, doesn’t cost anything and may give you better protection.
Insurance policy specifics
Learning about specific coverages of your insurance policy can help you determine the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. These are the usual coverages found on the average insurance policy.
Medical costs insurance
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for bills such as pain medications, chiropractic care and nursing services. They are used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover both the driver and occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is not an option in every state but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
UM/UIM Coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and damage to your Ford Focus.
Since many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Usually these limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision
This coverage pays for damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like vandalism, damage from a tornado or hurricane, damage from flooding and falling objects. The most your insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Auto collision coverage
Collision insurance pays for damage to your Focus resulting from a collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You first must pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage pays for claims such as colliding with a tree, hitting a parking meter, rolling your car and colliding with another moving vehicle. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. Another option is to increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Liability car insurance
This will cover damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property by causing an accident. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Coverage consists of three different limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see limits of 25/50/25 which stand for $25,000 bodily injury coverage, $50,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability insurance covers claims like bail bonds, attorney fees, medical services, loss of income and emergency aid. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but buy higher limits if possible.

Buy Smart and Save
Cheaper insurance coverage can be found online and from local agencies, and you should compare rates from both so you have a total pricing picture. Some companies don’t offer rate quotes online and these smaller providers only sell through independent agents.
When you buy insurance online, do not reduce coverage to reduce premium. There are a lot of situations where someone dropped liability limits or collision coverage to discover at claim time that the savings was not a smart move. Your aim should be to buy a smart amount of coverage at the best possible price, but do not sacrifice coverage to save money.
