Tailor your auto insurance coverage to you
When it comes to choosing the best auto insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there isn’t really a one size fits all plan. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s.
For example, these questions may help you determine whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.
- Does coverage extend to Mexico or Canada?
- Should I have combined single limit or split liability limits?
- Can I get a multi-policy discount?
- Am I covered if I hit my neighbor’s mailbox?
- Do I need PIP coverage since I have good health insurance?
- How much liability insurance is required?
If you can’t answer these questions but you know they apply to you, you may need to chat with an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, complete this form. It is quick, free and can provide invaluable advice.
Specific coverage details
Understanding the coverages of insurance helps when choosing which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement.
Uninsured or underinsured coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection when the “other guys” either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered losses include injuries to you and your family as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.
Medical expense coverage – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance reimburse you for expenses like doctor visits, funeral costs and hospital visits. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover all vehicle occupants and will also cover if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal injury protection coverage is only offered in select states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision – Collision insurance will pay to fix damage to your Malibu caused by collision with another car or object. A deductible applies then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision can pay for things like scraping a guard rail, hitting a mailbox, hitting a parking meter and colliding with another moving vehicle. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to raise the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Comprehensive protection – This coverage covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims such as rock chips in glass, a broken windshield, falling objects and hitting a bird. The maximum payout your insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Liability – This protects you from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Coverage consists of three different limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. Your policy might show values of 25/50/25 that means you have $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $50,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000.
Liability can pay for claims such as loss of income, medical expenses, repair costs for stationary objects and pain and suffering. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as high a limit as you can afford.
